A clear clinical question

When another
perspective helps.

We consider each referral individually. Advice, assessment, treatment planning or onward referral may be the appropriate outcome.

01

Advanced aesthetic cases.

Complex histories, previous treatment, second opinions and planning where anatomy, expectations or a staged approach need particular consideration. The starting point is a careful review of the patient’s priorities and clinical history.

02

Headaches, jaw pain & TMD.

Clenching, grinding and suspected chewing-muscle involvement, including questions about the masseter and temporalis. We consider the dental, muscular and joint picture, with medical or specialist input where needed.

03

Complications & further support.

Clinical review after aesthetic treatment, unexpected outcomes and support in deciding what should happen next. Urgency and the patient’s immediate needs come before routine referral arrangements.

Headaches need the right assessment. Jaw symptoms and headaches can overlap, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses. This pathway does not replace medical assessment of headache or specialist headache care. A referral does not imply that an injectable treatment is indicated.

From enquiry to assessment

A clear handover.
A considered next step.

Good referrals help everyone understand the reason for the appointment, what has happened so far and who is responsible for the next stage of care.

01

Discuss the case.

Contact the clinic with the reason for referral and level of urgency. The team will help identify the appropriate next step and how to share the clinical information.

02

Confirm the plan.

The referral is reviewed for suitability. We clarify the receiving clinician, any further information needed, appointment arrangements and fees before proceeding.

03

Coordinate the care.

Following assessment, the patient is offered an explanation of the findings and options. With their permission, recommendations can be shared with the referring clinician.

Before referring

The details
that matter.

A concise clinical summary is often the most useful starting point. Share relevant information with the patient’s knowledge and appropriate permission.

  • Your name, professional role, practice and contact details.
  • The reason for referral, your clinical question and relevant symptom timeline.
  • Relevant medical and dental history, medicines, allergies and care already provided.
  • For previous aesthetic treatment: dates, product and treatment details, and the original record where available.
  • Relevant clinical photographs or records, shared through the agreed route.
  • Any immediate concerns, current care arrangements and preferred receiving clinician.

Please provide information relevant to the referral. The online upload facility will be added once the clinic’s new referral account is ready.

For referring colleagues

A few useful
clarifications.

Practical information about scope, communication and coordinating care.

Who can refer to Soprano?

Dentists, doctors and other treating healthcare professionals can contact the clinic to discuss whether a referral is appropriate. Please tell us your professional role and the clinical question you would like us to address. We review the scope of the referral before confirming an appointment.

Can I request Dr Andrew Culbard or Dr Shad Jaff?

Yes. Please tell the team if you have a preference, or if you have already discussed the case with one of our directors. We will consider the clinical requirements and availability before confirming who will see the patient.

Can you assess masseter or temporalis concerns?

Referrals may include clenching, grinding, chewing-muscle discomfort or a question about masseter or temporalis management. Assessment considers the muscles, jaw joints, dental health and wider history. An injection is not an assumed outcome. Dental protection, conservative care or onward assessment may be more appropriate.

Does this include headaches?

We can consider headaches where a jaw-related component is suspected, alongside the dental and medical history. This is not a general headache or neurology service. A headache should not automatically be attributed to clenching or TMD; new, unusual or worsening headaches may require medical assessment.

Can I refer a patient following aesthetic treatment elsewhere?

Yes, you can contact us about a second opinion, an unexpected result or a suspected complication. Where available, please have the original treatment record, product details, dates, symptom timeline and details of care already provided ready. We will first establish whether the case is appropriate for our service and how urgently it needs assessment.

How should I request urgent support?

Phone 0131 229 6688 and explain that you are a clinician seeking urgent clinical advice. We aim to respond as soon as possible, but immediate availability cannot be guaranteed. Do not wait for a reply to an online referral or message if the patient needs urgent assessment. Use the appropriate emergency or specialist pathway when required.

How do I send clinical photographs and patient information?

Our online referral form is being prepared. For now, telephone the clinic to discuss the referral process and agree an appropriate route for sharing clinical information. Please do not send patient photographs or sensitive records through social media or an unconfirmed email address.

Does submitting a referral transfer responsibility for the patient?

A referral enquiry does not confirm acceptance, an appointment or a transfer of clinical responsibility. The referring clinician should maintain appropriate care and escalation arrangements until the receiving clinician has confirmed the next steps. We will clarify the scope of any assessment or treatment with the patient and referrer.

Will the patient and referrer receive a clear plan?

The consultation is intended to clarify the concern, options and appropriate next steps. With the patient’s permission, findings and recommendations can be shared with the referrer. Any proposed treatment, limitations and fees are discussed before the patient decides whether to proceed.
